Guide to Transitions® Lenses

Imagine a single pair of glasses that adapts to your life, seamlessly. Perfectly clear indoors, they transform into stylish sunglasses the moment you step outside, providing constant comfort and protection. This is the magic of Transitions® light-adaptive lenses.

This guide explains the science behind the world’s leading photochromic lens brand, showcases the vibrant new palette of style colours, and provides an honest look at the pros and cons to help you decide if Transitions® are the perfect fit for your lifestyle.

Transitions® vs. Photochromic: What’s the Difference?

This is the most common point of confusion, so let’s clarify it upfront.

Photochromic is the name of the technology. It describes any lens that darkens in response to UV light.

Transitions® is the leading brand name of photochromic lenses, renowned for its advanced technology, quality, and colour options.

Think of it like this: all Transitions® are photochromic, but not all photochromic lenses are Transitions®. At JOIUSS, we offer the genuine Transitions® brand to ensure you receive the best performance and durability.

How Do Transitions® Lenses Work?

The science is remarkably elegant. Millions of patented photochromic molecules are embedded within the lens. These molecules are invisible indoors and away from UV light. When exposed to UV rays (even on a cloudy day), the structure of these molecules changes, causing them to absorb visible light and darken the lens.

When you go back indoors, the process reverses, and the lenses become fully clear again. The latest generation of Transitions® technology, GEN S™, has made this change faster and more responsive than ever before.

The JOIUSS™ Transitions® Style Palette

Transitions® are no longer just about convenience; they’re about style. Gone are the days of only grey and brown. You can now choose from a palette of 8 vibrant colours to express your personal style and complement your chosen frames.

Available Tones

Feature Description
Grey The classic choice. A neutral grey tint for the most natural colour perception.
Brown A warm, high-contrast tint that enhances depth perception.
Graphite Green A vintage-inspired tint that offers natural vision and enhanced contrast.
Sapphire A cool, calming blue that adds a unique and stylish statement.
Amethyst A sophisticated and elegant purple for a subtle touch of colour.
Emerald A vibrant, bright green that makes a bold and fashionable impression.
Amber A warm, vintage-inspired hue that provides excellent contrast.
Ruby A rich, daring red for those who want to stand out from the crowd.

Style Note: Pairing your lens colour to your frame is the ultimate detail. A Sapphire lens in a silver metal frame like our Dennis Avaitor creates a cool, modern look, while an Amber lens in a tortoiseshell frame like our Malcolm leans into a classic, vintage aesthetic.

The Pros and Cons of Transitions® Lenses

Like any technology, Transitions® have clear benefits and some specific limitations. We believe in being transparent so you can make an informed choice.

Feature Pros Cons
Ultimate Convenience Don't Work in Most Cars
Constant UV Protection Temperature Sensitive
Cost-Effective Slower to Fade Back

The Benefits

Convenience: One pair of glasses for everything. You never have to switch between your regular glasses and sunglasses again.

UV Protection: Your eyes are protected from 100% of UVA and UVB rays all the time, without you even having to think about it.

Cost-Effective: It can be more affordable than buying two separate pairs of prescription glasses and prescription sunglasses.

The Limitations

They Don’t Work in Most Cars: This is the most important limitation to understand. Most car windshields block the UV rays that Transitions® lenses need to activate. Therefore, they will not darken significantly while you are driving. For driving, we always recommend a dedicated pair of prescription sunglasses.

Temperature Sensitivity: Photochromic lenses react to temperature. They get darker in cold weather and may not get quite as dark in very hot weather.

Fade-Back Time: While the latest generation is faster than ever, they still take a few minutes to return to fully clear when you come back inside.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Transitions® lenses worth it?

For many people, absolutely. If you frequently move between indoors and outdoors and value convenience above all else, they are an excellent solution. However, if your primary need is for sunglasses while driving, a dedicated pair of polarized sunglasses is a better choice.

How long do Transitions® lenses last?

With proper care, you can expect your Transitions® lenses to perform well for three years or more. Over time, they may take slightly longer to transition and may retain a very faint tint when indoors.

Can I get Transitions® on my progressive lenses?

Yes. Transitions® technology can be applied to both single vision and progressive lenses, giving you the combined benefit of seamless vision at all distances and seamless adaptation to light.

Do Transitions® lenses block blue light?

Yes. In their clear state, Transitions® lenses filter blue light from digital screens, similar to a standard clear blue light lens. When activated outdoors, they provide even greater protection from blue light from the sun.
